The Fastest Route to the Sahara — From Fes
Fes is closer to the dunes than Marrakech. Add a 3rd day for the Todra Gorge + slower pace. Or do the full 5-day one-way crossing to Marrakech.
Day 1
Pickup at 7:30 AM. Drive south through Ifrane — Morocco’s alpine ski town, called Little Switzerland for its chalets. Stop in the Azrou cedar forest to spot Barbary apes (the only wild macaques north of the Sahara). Continue through the high plateau to Midelt for lunch. Cross the Ziz Valley palmery — thousands of date palms in a green ribbon through red rock. Arrive at the dune edge by 5 PM. Sunset camel trek to camp.
Day 2
Sunrise on the dunes. Breakfast. Optional stop at Erfoud’s fossil workshops (Devonian-era trilobites, prepared marble). Drive back via the Ziz Valley to Fes by 7 PM. Or continue south for a 4-day extension to Marrakech.
