Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga: Which Sahara Should You Visit?

Most Morocco desert tours go to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — taller dunes, easier access, more camps. Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid is wilder, requires a 4×4 off-road drive, and is best if you have already seen Chebbi.

What You See — 3-Day Marrakech-to-Merzouga Route

Most blogs are vague about distances. Here is the actual route, kilometer by kilometer, as driven 400+ times by our lead guide Hassan since 2014.

Day 1

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Dades Valley
368 km · ~7.5 hrs driving
Cross the High Atlas via the 2,260 m Tizi n’Tichka pass (144 km / 3.5 hrs). Stop at Aït Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, used in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Continue 168 km / 3 hrs through Skoura’s palmery to your kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley. Sunset over the rock formations called the ‘Monkey Fingers’.

Day 2

Dades → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)
295 km · ~5.5 hrs driving
Morning walk in the 300m-high Todra Gorge. Drive south through Tinghir’s date palmery and Erfoud (fossil capital of Morocco — Devonian-era trilobites). Arrive at the edge of the dunes by 4 PM. Mount your camel at 5 PM for a 1-hour sunset trek into Erg Chebbi. Arrive at the luxury camp by sunset. Berber drum-circle dinner, sky full of stars.

Day 3

Merzouga → Ouarzazate → Marrakech
560 km · ~9 hrs driving
5:30 AM optional sunrise camel ride or quad bike. Breakfast, then drive back via Ouarzazate (‘Morocco’s Hollywood’ — visit Atlas Studios if time). Cross the Tichka pass again. Arrive Marrakech around 7 PM. Drop-off at your riad.

What the Sahara Camp Is Actually Like

From the lead guide

“The camp at Erg Chebbi has 12 private tents. Generator power runs until 11 PM — charge your phone before dinner. Standard tents share a compost-toilet block; luxury tents have their own en-suite bathroom with a hot-water shower. Wi-Fi works only at reception. 4G is solid on Maroc Telecom; weak on Orange. Bring a power bank. The Berber drum circle starts after dinner — join in even if you cannot keep rhythm. Wake up at 5:45 AM for the sunrise. Coffee will be ready.”

Travelers Who Trusted Us With Their Sahara Trip

Hassan picked us up at 7 AM sharp. The 4×4 was new, A/C cold, music on point. Aït Benhaddou was incredible — we watched the sun light up the kasbah from a rooftop terrace. The camp at Erg Chebbi exceeded everything I had read online. Real bed, hot shower, a proper bathroom, and the silence of the desert was unreal.

Sarah K.
New York, USA — 3-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech

Booked the private tour for our 10th anniversary. Driver Brahim treated us like royalty. Stopped at every photo spot we wanted, including a Berber family in Tinghir who invited us in for tea. The camel trek at sunset is the closest I have come to magic.

James T.
Manchester, UK — 4-Day Private Sahara Tour

Sahara crossing one-way from Fes to Marrakech was the perfect way to see Morocco. Ifrane, cedar forest, monkeys, then dunes by sunset. Guide spoke perfect French. Aucun frais caché — tout compris exactly as described.

Sophie L.
Paris, France — 5-Day Fes to Marrakech Crossing

Splurged on the luxury camp. Worth every euro. Private en-suite tent, dinner served by candlelight, a private guitarist around the fire. Booked through them after comparing 5 other operators — only company that gave a transparent itemized quote.

Lukas M.
Berlin, Germany — Luxury 3-Day Desert Tour

Solo traveler, joined a group of 6 others from 4 different countries. Made friends for life. No upsells, no hidden fees, no rushed schedule. The 4×4 was new and the driver knew every shortcut. 10/10.

Marco R.
Sydney, Australia — 3-Day Group Tour

The team respected our halal food requirements without us even having to ask. Camp staff arranged a private dinner before sunset for us. Will book again, inshallah.

Morocco Desert Tour FAQ

How much does a Morocco desert tour cost?

€195–€395 per person for a 3-day shared group trip from Marrakech, €499–€695 for a 4–5-day private 4×4 tour, and €800+ for luxury camp upgrades. Prices include private transport, licensed driver-guide, camel trek, dinner and breakfast at the Sahara camp, and one to two overnight stays in Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga.

How long is a Morocco desert tour?

Most Morocco desert tours run 2 to 5 days. The 3-day Marrakech-to-Merzouga round trip is the most popular. Add a fourth day for the Todra Gorge, or extend to 5 days for a one-way Marrakech-to-Fes Sahara crossing.

What is the best time of year for a Morocco desert tour?

March, April, October, and November. Daytime highs 22–28°C, nights cool but not cold. Avoid June–August (40°C+) and December–January overnights at the camp (4°C low).

Can I do a Morocco desert tour from Casablanca or Fes?

Yes. Marrakech to Merzouga is the classic 3-day route. Fes to Merzouga is shorter — 2 days minimum. Casablanca routes take 4–7 days because of the longer distance. We also run one-way Sahara crossings between Marrakech and Fes.

What is the difference between Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) has Morocco’s tallest dunes — up to 150 m — and is reached by paved road. Erg Chigaga (M’Hamid) is more remote, requires a 60 km off-road 4×4 drive, and is best for travelers who want fewer crowds.

Is the Morocco desert camp comfortable?

Yes. Our partner camps in Erg Chebbi have private tents with real beds, en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, carpets, and 24-hour generator power until 11 PM. Dinner is a 4-course Berber meal followed by live Gnawa drumming.

Are Morocco desert tours private or group?

Both. Group tours: max 8 travelers in a shared 4×4 minivan, from $180 / 3 days. Private tours: your own 4×4, driver, and guide — minimum 2 travelers, from $400 / 3 days. Same routes, different intimacy.

What should I pack for a Morocco desert tour?

Light layers, fleece for cold nights, scarf for the sun, sunscreen SPF 50, closed-toe shoes for the camel trek, a power bank for the camp, and one small overnight bag (your main suitcase stays in the 4×4 or hotel).

Is the camel trek required, or can I drive to the camp?

The camel trek is optional. Travelers with knee, back, or balance issues can be driven to the camp by 4×4 — 20 minutes versus 60 minutes by camel. Many travelers ride a camel one way and drive back the next morning. No extra cost.

Are Morocco desert tours kid-friendly?

Yes — children aged 4 and up handle it well. We pace driving days for kids, install booster seats on request, and the camel trek is fine for confident children over 6. Most camps have family tents that sleep 4. We recommend the 4-day route over 3 days for families.
